Children's Story-Fragile Sumitra |
I am Sumitra and am 15 years old. My home is a small village in the mountains of the Himalaya. I lived there with my parents and my two sisters and we had a small farm. When my small brother was born nine years ago everything changed. My mother died a few hours after the birth, there was no help for her. We lived with relatives and neighbors because the father had to leave frequently to make some money in town. I was interested to go to school but could only occasionally do so. Most of the time I had to prepare meals for my small sisters and for my brother and was busy with the household. After that my uncle and neighbors said that they cannot look for us children anymore. My father asked the authorities for help and gradually we children were admitted at the CFO-Children`s Home. The doctors in Kathmandu told me that I was malnourished. I also had problems with my eyes because of poor supply of vitamin A. All this is over now and I am healthy. I attend Class 10 at school and know how to read and write very well by now! In Dashain festival I visit my father in the village and we are happy to have found a good solution for us children.
